Entering Someone Else’s Joy

“Rejoice with those who rejoice…”
—Romans 12:15, NIV
Most people expect a police officer to show up on someone’s worst day. Few expect her to show up with a hula hoop.
Yet perhaps that is exactly what makes this moment so beautiful. The children are laughing, clapping, cheering as a woman officer steps into their world. For a few minutes, she is not writing reports or responding to a crisis. She is simply rejoicing with those who are rejoicing.
We often think of ministry as entering someone’s sorrow. Jesus certainly did that. He stood beside the broken, the grieving, the forgotten. But Scripture also calls us to enter someone’s joy without hesitation, without evaluating whether it’s “worth” our time. We’re invited to celebrate victories, laugh with children, applaud small accomplishments, and delight in simple gifts, no strings attached.
That takes a kind of humility. It means setting aside our own agenda, even our own weariness, to notice what matters to someone else. It means not standing back to judge whether their joy is significant enough, or holy enough, or deserved. Real love doesn’t audit happiness. It just joins it.
That kind of presence builds trust. For a child, this may become more than a fun afternoon. Years from now, that little boy or girl may remember the officer who smiled instead of hurrying away, who let the badge become a bridge instead of a distance.
Those who wear the uniform carry responsibilities most of us will never fully understand. They witness pain, violence, addiction, heartbreak. Day after day they step into situations others are running from. Yet God, in His kindness, also gives moments like these, moments that remind the heart why people are worth loving, and worth loving without conditions.
Sometimes the greatest act of service is not solving a problem. Sometimes it is simply joining the laughter, unguarded and unjudging.
As followers of Christ, we’re called to the same posture. There are people around us who need someone to notice their joy just as much as others need someone to notice their tears. Celebration is an act of love. Encouragement is an act of love. Shared laughter, offered freely, without a raised eyebrow, is an act of love.
Never underestimate what God can accomplish through a heart willing to enter someone else’s happiness instead of standing outside it, arms crossed.
Joy has a way of opening doors that arguments, and judgment, never will.
Perhaps today God is inviting you to look around, find someone celebrating, and join them, no explanation required. You may discover that while you were encouraging someone else, He quietly refreshed your own heart as well.

Reflect
Who in your life could use someone to celebrate with them, instead of quietly watching or evaluating from the sidelines?
Is there joy you’ve held at arm’s length because it seemed too small, too simple, or not your kind of celebration? What would it look like to enter it fully?
Prayer
Father God, thank You for being the giver of every good gift. Teach us to rejoice with those who rejoice, and to enter the lives of others with genuine, unguarded love. Strip away any impulse in us to judge or measure someone else’s joy. Teach us simply to join it. Give us eyes to recognize opportunities to encourage, celebrate, and build trust through simple acts of kindness.
May our joy never point people to ourselves, but always to the goodness of Christ. And for every woman who faithfully serves her community, renew her heart with moments of laughter that remind her she is deeply loved by You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Until next time…
Keep being Beautiful You! 💙
